3. Tribe of Levi

3. Tribe of Levi

Levi is the third son of Jacob Mella. In the Torah, the character of Levi is characterized by zeal and passion, but also by a special spiritual vocation. He is best known for two major events: first, together with his brother Shimon, he brutally took revenge on the people of Nablus for raping their sister Dina. This drew strong criticism from his father Yaakov. Second, Levi's descendants were chosen to serve in the holy place as a tribe of priests and Levites, a role granted to them because of their loyalty to God in the sin of the calf. Moses and Aaron, the leaders of the nation at the time of the Exodus, were descendants of Levi.

Greetings

Leah's blessing at birth (Genesis 29)

"And she was with child again, and gave birth to a son; and said, Now at last my husband will be united to me, because I have given him three sons: so he was named Levi."

Jacob's Blessing (Genesis 49)

"Simeon and Levi are brothers; deceit and force are their secret designs.
Take no part in their secrets, O my soul; keep far away, O my heart, from their meetings; for in their wrath they put men to death, and for their pleasure even oxen were wounded.
A curse on their passion for it was bitter; and on their wrath for it was cruel. I will let their heritage in Jacob be broken up, driving them from their places in Israel."

The Blessing of Moses (Deuteronomy 33)

And of Levi he said, Give your Thummim to Levi and let the Urim be with your loved one, whom you put to the test at Massah, with whom you were angry at the waters of Meribah;
Who said of his father, Who is he? and of his mother, I have not seen her; he kept himself separate from his brothers and had no knowledge of his children: for they have given ear to your word and kept your agreement. They will be the teachers of your decisions to Jacob and of your law to Israel: the burning of perfumes before you will be their right, and the ordering of burned offerings on your altar.  Let your blessing, O Lord, be on his substance, may the work of his hands be pleasing to you: may those who take up arms against him and all who have hate for him, be wounded through the heart, never to be lifted up again

Jacob's greetings to his sons

The book of Genesis ends with a series of blessings of Jacob's instructions to his sons, the tribes of Israel. The Torah commentators were faced with the question: What is the essence of blessings? What is the overall message that our forefather Jacob sought to convey to us? Let's look a little at the content of the blessings: Reuben, as the firstborn, deserved to be king. But he was rejected because he was "carbonated as water," meaning that his recklessness might
